Farm to Family –
Milk's Journey from Cow to Consumer
4th Grade Video and Curriculum
~ Available in VHS or DVD ~
These days when most people are hungry, they simply grab a bite to eat without
thinking beyond what would whet their appetites. All they do is open the
refrigerator or pantry door or head for the nearest restaurant, place their
order and voila! Their food appears like magic.
As they stroll the aisles of their local
supermarkets, they most likely don't think about the planting, growing,
harvesting, animal care, feeding, milking, hauling, processing, manufacturing
and distribution that occurred to make the vast array of food available to
them.
In fact, the majority of Americans have never even
set foot on a farm. That's why the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board decided to
create a virtual tour following the journey that milk takes from the farm to
their families' tables.
Farm to Family portrays Nate, an inner-city
kid, visiting his friend Jake's family farm where he receives a real dairy
education. The boys also visit a cheese plant (to learn how that famous
Wisconsin treasure is made), a distribution warehouse, a grocery store and
restaurant.
This video is available to fourth grade teachers
throughout Wisconsin to incorporate into their curricula. WMMB involved
teachers at that grade level in each phase of the production to ensure that the
program is on target. The video is packaged into four educational video
modules, each with its own "Tell Me More" segment narrated by a teenage girl.

Dairy Cows –
Keeping Wisconsin Green
4th-6th Grade Curriculum
~ Available in VHS or DVD ~
The Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board (WMMB) has
teamed up with Discover Mediaworks to produce an episode of the popular
children's television show, Into the Outdoors. The resulting 24-minute
educational video, "Dairy Cows - Keeping Wisconsin Green," is available to
Wisconsin educators
The project explores the nature of dairy cows and
takes viewers on a journey from the late 1800's to the future of dairying in
Wisconsin. Viewers are continually reminded of the essential role dairy cows
play in keeping Wisconsin's landscape and economy fruitful.
The Into the Outdoors Adventure Team, a
group of Wisconsin children ages 10 to 12, travel to Old World Wisconsin and
Koepke Farms in Waukesha County and Mayer Farm in Washington County to give
viewers a first-hand experience of what dairying means to Wisconsin. The team
also follows a group of Junior Dairy Ambassadors to an elementary school, visit
a county fair, and learn about the living laboratories installed on Wisconsin
Discovery Farms.
Winner of the November 2006 Emmy for "Outstanding
Achievement for Children’s Programs – Children’s/Teen Single Program or Program
Series" by the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television

Growing Wisconsin Careers
Highlighting many of Wisconsin's 300+ dairy industry careers
7th-12th Grade Curriculum
~ Available in VHS ~
What do a dietitian, a radio broadcaster and a veterinarian have in common? They
all have careers within agriculture. Today there are more agricultural careers
available than ever before–more than 300 career opportunities exist within
dairy. These agricultural career opportunities extend well beyond the
traditional farm owner and milk hauler. In fact, chefs, engineers and web
developers can all have careers related to agriculture.
To showcase these exciting opportunities within agriculture, WMMB has developed
a 25-minute video entitled "Growing Wisconsin Careers." Complete with an
introduction by Jackie Mundt, National FFA President, and biographies on twelve
successful ag professionals, the video shows students the diversity of
ag-related careers.
"This project reflects the many directions students can take with their
education and careers while remaining close to agriculture," says Liz
Fitzsimmons, Director, Local Markets Communications and coordinator of the
project.

other environmentalists to find out how they are all working together to
protect Wisconsin's resources. We'll learn about the state's conservation
leadership and how dairy cows are natural recyclers. We'll also explore new and
exciting ways that dairy producers are generating renewable energy.

The Art of Cheesemaking
Wisconsin Cheese Training and Education Video
High School Curriculum
~ Available in DVD ~
The Art of Cheesemaking covers the art and science of the craft of taking
cow's milk and converting it into cow's milk cheeses. The video will help the
viewer to understand what happens to the milk, rennet, cultures and enzymes
that create the science of cheese making, while opening the viewers mind to the
artistry of the process. (about 11 mins.)
Cheese Handling and Storage picks up where the cheesemaking process ends.
Many consumers and professional foods persons erroneously believe a little
plastic wrap is all you need to cover cut cheese. This video explains proper
cutting and handling of the varieties of cheese. Think the three C's — Clean,
Cold and Covered — for storage, and beyond. (about 8.5 mins.)
Cheese Performance in the Kitchen video provides
a quick look into the simple fact cheeses are made differently
and, as a result, will perform
differently. You will be exposed to the differences between
cold and hot manipulation and cooking differences in various
cheese varieties. (about 8
mins.)
